Privacy Policy

Effective Date: May 22, 2026 | Last Updated: May 22, 2026

The Trade Me CompareMe Chrome Extension is designed with a strict "privacy-first" and local-only philosophy. We believe that your search history, vehicle preferences, and housing candidates are entirely personal. That is why this extension does not collect, transmit, or share any user data.

1. Information Handled by the Extension

When you browse Trade Me listings and explicitly choose to save a listing by clicking the "Save to Compare" button, the extension extracts only the following public listing details:

  • Listing Identifiers: The Trade Me Listing ID and URL.
  • General Info: Listing title, price, and primary image URL.
  • Property Specs: Property type, available date, maximum tenants, description snippet, and address.
  • Motor Specs: Odometer mileage, body style, seats, fuel type, engine size, transmission, plate number, year, color, number of owners, NZ import history, registration expiry, and WOF expiry.

These fields are extracted dynamically from the webpage DOM and structured metadata elements of the listing pages you actively choose to save.

2. How We Store and Process Your Data

All extracted listing details are processed and stored entirely offline in your browser's local sandbox using the chrome.storage.local Chrome API.

🔒 Absolute Local Storage Guarantee

We do not operate any background servers, remote databases, API gateways, or tracking systems. None of your extracted listing data, browsing behavior, or search queries ever leave your local computer. There is zero network communication or data synchronisation with remote infrastructure.

3. Third-Party Disclosures & Data Sharing

Because we do not collect or transmit user data to any external location, it is impossible for us to share, sell, distribute, rent, or lease your personal information to third parties.

  • No advertisement networks are integrated.
  • No telemetry, web beacons, or analytics scripts (such as Google Analytics) are loaded.
  • No background monetization platforms are included.

4. Justification of Required Permissions

To operate securely, the extension requests minimal permissions under Chrome's Manifest V3 standard:

  • storage: Required to save your selected listings locally so they persist across tabs, popups, and browser sessions.
  • activeTab: Required to access and scrape public specs only when you are actively viewing a listing and choose to save it.
  • *://*.trademe.co.nz/* matches: Used strictly to inject the content script that displays the "Save to Compare" floating button on eligible Trade Me property and vehicle detail pages.

5. User Rights and Data Control

You have full, immediate control over all data stored by the extension:

  • Individual Removal: You can delete any saved listing instantly by clicking the "Remove" or "Trash" icon in either the toolbar popup or the side-by-side comparison matrix.
  • Complete Purge: Uninstalling the extension, clearing Chrome's site data, or resetting extension preferences will permanently wipe all saved listing metrics from your computer. Deleted data is non-recoverable because we do not keep backups.

6. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in extension features or Chrome Developer Program policies. Any revisions will be published immediately on this page and will include an updated "Last Updated" timestamp.
